1790 United States Federal Census

As mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the United States Constitution, the First US Federal Census was taken on August 2, 1790. It enumerated the population of the United States to be 3,929,214(approx). The marshals collected data for all thirteen states Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, and districts and territories that would become Vermont, Kentucky, Tennessee and Maine.

The 1790 Census was the first official attempt to collect and record information about the people of USA for the purpose of assessing direct federal taxes and apportioning seats in the House of Representatives.

Number of free white males under 16 years of age
Number of free white males of 16 years and above (to evaluate the country's industrial and military potential).
Number of free white females.
Number of all other free persons and slaves in a family

Research value of the First

(1790) US Census:

Because of the non availability of the 1790 population census microdata, running genealogy research is quite difficult. However, the Census was partial and records of many states were lost and damaged. Thus, one may find part of their family history information from the secondary sources relating to the 1790 census.
